More than 900 standards must be met with evaluations in areas including cleanliness, pet health records, exam facilities, dental and nursing care, pharmacy, laboratory, emergency services, diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, and surgery. Only 14% of small animal hospitals in North America are accredited.
