Senior Pet Care Exam

Like humans, dogs and cats experience physical change as they grow older. Signs of aging develop slowly – more naps during the day, a little extra weight around the middle, maybe a few gray hairs. When your dog or cat shows signs of aging, you can take greater responsibility for his/her care to make the later years happy and healthy ones. This care includes a possible change in diet, exercise habits, and most importantly more frequent veterinary checkups to insure early detection of any health problems. To meet the specialized needs of the geriatric dog or cat (6 to 8 years old, depending on breed), Irvine Veterinary Services suggests a yearly Senior Pet Care Exam. Within the course of two office visits, an IVS Veterinarian will thoroughly review the results of the exam and diagnostic tests, which include:

Test Measure
Complete Physical Exam Routine check of ears, eyes, teeth, skin, etc.
Geriatric Blood Profile Checks organ function, red and white blood cell counts, measures hormone and electrolyte levels
Heartworm test (dogs) Heartworm is a growing problem in Southern California and can damage your dog’s heart
Urine Analysis Checks kidney function, screens for urinary tract disease
Fecal Analysis Checks for internal parasites more serious in older pets
Chest & Abdominal X-ray Checks heart and lung appearance
Blood pressure check (cats) Cats with heart, kidney and thyroid problems may only have elevated blood pressures early in the disease
Electrocardiogram Monitors heart electrical function and can detect many abnormalities

The exam is quick and easy for both client and patient and consists of an initial exam visit followed by a return visit within 1-2 days to review results. Along with a full explanation of test results, the Veterinarian may recommend diet or exercise changes, medication, and other health maintenance programs.

A 20% DISCOUNT IS AVAILABLE WHEN TESTS ARE PERFORMED TOGETHER
